The Wall Street Journal reported, citing a senior American official, that Trump had not had any serious discussions with his advisers about claiming to take over the Strait of Hormuz, and that his remarks at the Long Island campaign rally lacked political significance.
The American official also described Trump's statements as a "joke" and emphasized that such statements do not reflect the official policy of the Washington government.
The White House's withdrawal comes as Trump's claim that the Strait of Hormuz is turning into "American territory" has been met with strong reactions; a claim that critics have considered another example of the US President's controversial rhetoric to show power and exert political pressure.
Kazem Gharibabadi, Deputy Legal and International Affairs Minister of Iran's Foreign Ministry, also responded to these statements on his personal page: "The Strait of Hormuz cannot be taken over by tweets, aircraft carriers, or election speeches. Iran is neither afraid of threats nor intimidated by a show of power."
The Iranian official's reaction comes at a time when the Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the most important strategic waterways in the world, and any claim of ownership or attempt to impose its will on it will face serious opposition from regional countries.
