Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - International Service: US officials claimed on Tuesday morning that talks between Oman and Iran to increase shipping in the Strait of Hormuz are progressing.
The sources, who were not named, told the Wall Street Journal: "The Oman-Iran talks could reduce pressure on the global energy market."
They went on to explain: "There are concerns that the agreement between Iran and Oman could consolidate Tehran's control over the Strait of Hormuz."
The report also states: "US President Donald Trump prefers an agreement [between Iran and Oman] that fully reopens the Strait of Hormuz, rather than one that leaves Tehran more control over commercial traffic."
“However, American officials remain divided over Oman’s role,” the Wall Street Journal continued. Some senior administration officials privately accuse Muscat of siding with Tehran.
Others argue that Oman’s longstanding relationship with Iran makes it a valuable mediator, saying Trump is sacrificing Muscat in his efforts to reach a nuclear deal with Tehran.
