Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Iranian President Massoud Peshkekian on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan. According to the Kremlin, the Russian President said, referring to the growing ties between the two countries: “Russian-Iranian relations are constantly developing in all areas.”
Putin stressed the importance of humanitarian cooperation between the two countries and said that Russia praises the courage and perseverance of the Iranian people in defending their national interests. Putin also welcomed the signing of the memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States, saying; but unfortunately, this ceasefire was “fragile.”
In contrast, Massoud Pezhakian, referring to the strategic relations between Iran and Russia, stressed that Tehran remained committed to the memorandum of understanding signed with the United States and that if Washington returns to it, Iran will also fulfill its obligations.
The Iranian President thanked Moscow for its positions on the war against Iran and said that strategic relations with Russia help Iran against the United States and sanctions.
