Yasmine Perez-Desimas, Director of Operations for the International Committee of the Red Cross, warned about the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, saying that despite the vast needs, the country has gradually fallen out of the spotlight of the international community and that “the people of Afghanistan must not be abandoned.”

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: Ms. Perez-Desimas, who recently made a week-long trip to Kabul, emphasized that today Afghanistan “is neither in the spotlight of the media nor is it even seriously discussed in high-level international discussions.” She added: “We are facing a population that is fighting for survival; a population with extensive humanitarian needs, a collapsing health system, and high levels of unemployment.”
Referring to the sharp decline in international financial resources, Perez-Desimas said that the organization has also “had to make very difficult decisions” to continue its presence in Afghanistan. He warned that more than 100 health centers specializing in treating malnourished children across the country have been closed due to the reduction in aid.
He also referred to the malnutrition crisis, saying that about one million children in Afghanistan face life-threatening malnutrition and another 3.7 million children suffer from acute malnutrition.
Perez-Desimas said that Afghanistan remains one of the five largest operations of the ICRC in the world. The organization currently supports 46 clinics and seven rehabilitation centers in Afghanistan, and has also prioritized affected communities along the Durand Line.
It is worth noting that the Red Cross operations director had met with Abdul Salam Hanafi, the deputy administrative director of the Prime Minister, and Amir Khan Mottaki, the country’s foreign minister, during his visit to Kabul.
