Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - International Service: According to the IAEA website, the IAEA Board of Governors’ Quarterly Meeting has begun in Vienna and will be held for a week.
In addition to issues related to nuclear safety and security, the meeting will review the implementation of safeguards in Iran, North Korea and Syria and the nuclear safety situation in Ukraine. The Iranian nuclear file is on the agenda at a time when the United States and three European countries are trying to pass a new resolution against Tehran.
The Board of Governors reviews the Agency’s financial statements, programs and budget and makes recommendations to the General Conference on them. The Board also reviews applications for membership in the Agency, approves safeguards agreements and approves the publication of the Agency’s safety standards.
Grossi: Return to diplomacy is essential to find a solution to the issues related to Iran’s nuclear program
Raphael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said at the opening of the Board of Governors’ meeting that the Agency has not received information from Iran on the status of declared nuclear materials and facilities in the recent period, nor has it had access to these facilities; therefore, it has not been able to carry out its safeguards duties at Iran’s declared nuclear facilities.
Grossi claimed that: As a result, the Agency is not able to verify the status of Iran’s nuclear materials from a safeguards perspective, nor can it report on Iran’s implementation of relevant UN Security Council resolutions and Board of Governors resolutions.
He emphasized that for more than a year, the Agency has lost its control over previously declared stocks of low and high enriched uranium, including uranium enriched to 60 percent U-235, at facilities damaged by military attacks in June 2025.
Grossi described the situation as “a serious concern from a proliferation perspective,” and said the lack of information about these facilities and the nuclear material associated with them, and the Agency’s inability to conduct verification, must be addressed with the utmost urgency.
Without referring to the aggressions of the United States and the Zionist regime and condemning their actions, he called on Iran to cooperate constructively with the Agency to enable the full and effective implementation of Agency safeguards in Iran and to ensure that Tehran complies with its obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
