EU and FAO Launch €5 Million Project to Support the Country
The European Union and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) have announced the launch of a five-million-euro project to assist farmers and agribusinesses in the country. This project supports vulnerable households including returnees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and host communities in districts facing food insecurity, climate risks, and limited economic opportunities.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) – Kabul: The European Union and the FAO announced in a joint statement on Sunday the launch of a five-million-euro project aimed at assisting farmers and agribusinesses across the country.

The project aims to support vulnerable households—specifically returnees, IDPs, and host communities—residing in districts grappling with food and nutritional insecurity, climate-related risks, and limited economic opportunities.

According to the statement, the initiative involves establishing advisory centers to provide access to climate analysis and early-warning information, enabling farmers to make timely decisions regarding production and marketing as conditions change. Additionally, the project includes the provision of agricultural support packages, training on modern irrigation and farm management techniques, and the facilitation of market access.

Media reports indicate that this project builds upon previous collaborations between the EU, the FAO, and the country's Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock. In recent years, with financial backing from the EU, the FAO has implemented numerous programs across various provinces to improve food security, boost agricultural production, and empower smallholder farmers. This new project is reportedly set to run for three years and will be implemented in the ten provinces with the highest levels of vulnerability.

Agricultural and economic experts believe that launching such projects can play a significant role in poverty reduction, improving food security, and creating job opportunities in rural areas. Observers note that, given the country's heavy reliance on agriculture, investment in this sector can foster economic growth and reduce dependence on humanitarian aid.

Studies indicate that climate change, recurring droughts, and limited market access have been major challenges for farmers in recent years; projects focusing on early warning systems and climate-related advisory services can assist farmers in better managing these challenges.

However, some experts emphasize the need to ensure security, sustainable funding, and coordination with local institutions to guarantee the project's long-term success. Furthermore, they note that active participation by local communities and attention to the specific needs of women farmers could enhance the initiative's impact.
