Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: According to the agreement, passengers can book their entire trip with one ticket and register once and do not need to buy separate tickets for each part of the route. Passengers' checked luggage will also be transferred from Kabul directly at Islamabad International Airport to the next PIA flight, and passengers will not need to pick up and check in again. Passengers traveling to Gulf countries will also be exempt from Pakistani immigration checks as long as they remain airside at Islamabad airport.
"This interline partnership between Pakistan International Airlines and ComAir Afghanistan will create a smooth transit route that will connect Afghanistan to key destinations across the Middle East via Islamabad," PIA spokesman Abdullah Hafiz Khan said. According to him, in the second phase, the partnership is set to expand to other high-demand destinations, including Medina, Muscat and Al Ain in the UAE, to cover the needs of pilgrims, workers and business travellers.
The launch of the transit route comes as the closure of land routes between Afghanistan and Pakistan for the past year has made air travel the main option for passengers from both countries. The agreement could solve a significant part of the problems of Afghan passengers, especially workers living in Arab countries, and strengthen Islamabad as an air transit hub between South and West Asia.
