At least 30 people are confirmed dead and over 1 million others displaced in torrential rains and massive floods that have recently hit the northeastern Indian state of Assam, a senior government official said in the national capital Saturday.

"The Brahmaputra river and its tributaries breached their embankments at several places leading to the worst floods the state has witnessed in eight years. Though the state government has enough food grains to help the displaced people, the central government has assured all help to overcome the crisis," the official said, refusing to be named.

The Indian Air Force is carrying out rescue operations in the state along with the National Disaster Response Force comprising 548 personnel, he said, adding that the immediate respite is that the rains have stopped for the time being.
