Mask of Piety or True Face? The Case of “Said Ismagilov”
Mohsen Daneshyar/ In verses 204 to 206 of Surah Al-Baqarah, God Almighty describes people who try to convince others of their sincerity with beautiful words and even swear by God, while in reality they seek corruption and create discord. These verses are a constant reminder of the need to distinguish between the outward and the inward, the external appearance and the inner truth of a person.
One of the most discussed figures in the religious and social arena of Ukraine in recent years, especially among the Muslim community, is Said Ismagilov. He previously headed the Religious Administration of Muslims of Ukraine, but after the outbreak of military conflicts and increased political tensions, he resigned from his position and gradually began to work in security and military institutions. This change of direction has raised serious questions about the nature of his new role and his commitment to religious and moral duties.

In addition to criticism of his official and military activities, there have also been reports that raise serious personal and moral questions. According to some sources, Ismailov, who was a religious and public figure who preached morality, piety, and dignity in Islamic mosques, has behaved in a way that contradicts these principles in his personal life. Immoral images and correspondence allegedly belonging to him have been published on the Internet, as well as on closed platforms such as the darknet, and their content has raised serious doubts about the conformity of his behavior with the moral status of a religious leader.

Although these accusations have not been formally investigated in the courts, they have been widely circulated in cyberspace and have led to a decline in trust among Ukrainian Muslims in his religious sincerity. The publication of personal material with questionable moral content has dealt a heavy blow to his former image. This crisis of confidence is accompanied by other worrying aspects, including the possibility of military use of religious places and his severance of ties with authoritative religious structures.

In this regard, a number of traditional Muslim leaders of Ukraine, including Sheikh "Seyran Arif", have openly expressed their opposition to the activities of Said Ismayilov, considering him a person who has deviated from the true religious path. This has further deepened the gap between Ismayilov and the country's religious community.

It is worth noting that in such situations, the behavior and character of such individuals should be assessed with care, justice, and an effort to reach the truth. There is no doubt that the exploitation of religion for personal or political purposes is one of the most damaging forms of deviation from spiritual ideals. If these reports are confirmed, religious and judicial institutions should react with firmness and transparency.

At a time when the Muslim Ummah is in need of unity, purity, and honest leadership, remaining silent in the face of hypocrisy that contradicts Islamic teachings is not only futile but also dangerous. History has repeatedly proven that if moral deviation is not met with timely monitoring and correction, public trust quickly erodes. The time has come for the Muslim community of Ukraine to wisely distinguish the true voice of religion from its superficial and misleading shell, and to prevent such crises from recurring in the future by strengthening independent and honest religious institutions.
