Sanctions or Understanding? The Need to Change the Security Council
Rahmatullah Faizan/ According to international custom, foreign ministers enjoy diplomatic immunity so that they can freely participate in international meetings and negotiations. However, the UN Security Council has long placed a list of Islamic Emirate officials under sanctions; sanctions that include travel restrictions, asset freezes, and arms sales bans, and are considered inherently unfair.
In recent years, the Islamic Emirate has shown that it believes in dialogue, understanding, and negotiation rather than confrontation, and is striving for lasting peace and stability in the country. Obviously, if the international community and the Security Council truly believe in resolving issues through dialogue, it would be appropriate to remove these unfair sanctions and replace restrictions with the path of understanding and constructive interaction.
The recent decision of the Security Council to exempt Mr. Amir Khan Mottaki, Foreign Minister of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, from travelling to India is a positive and commendable step. This decision could pave the way for the complete lifting of sanctions and opening the doors of dialogue and cooperation. It is hoped that the United Nations, by understanding the objective realities of Afghanistan, will adopt a fair and responsible approach towards the people of this country and pave the way for positive and sustainable engagement as a member of the international community.
