Seyyed Isa Hosseini Mazari / The main issue is the anti-Zionist discourse that is gaining votes in an important and influential city. The city where Mamdani is now mayor expelled the Resistance Conference from its city 30 years ago, but now the people of the same city have voted for someone who takes anti-Netanyahu positions.
New York’s importance is enormous: the city’s economy alone accounts for about 13 percent of the entire US economy, which is larger than the economies of Britain or France; 45 percent of the value of the entire world’s financial markets is located in this city; and New York is the center of important media outlets such as the New York Times, CNN, Bloomberg, NBC, and the Times. Also, with the headquarters of the United Nations, the city is considered a center of global diplomacy and, with a population of nearly 2 million Jews, is also considered the heart of Jewish power.
The growth of anti-Zionist discourse in New York means its growth in America and even the world. This event indicates important political and social changes that will have repercussions beyond the borders of America, on a global level.
The full text of Hosseini Mazari's note is as follows:
I have heard and read various views and analyses about Zahran Mamdani becoming mayor; both as a description and a point of strength and as a criticism and a point of weakness.
One says that Mamdani participated in the gay parade, another emphasizes that he is a Muslim and a Shiite of the 12 Imams, some consider him a "project", some highlight his relations with Jews and some have taken note of his being an immigrant. Some, while praising the democracy of America, where an immigrant can reach such a position, use this issue as an excuse to criticize countries where the spirit of anti-immigrantism prevails or where the rights of immigrants are not properly respected.
However, in my opinion, these words, analyses and views, whether consciously or unconsciously, distract the public's mind from the main issue.
The point is that the anti-Zionist discourse is gaining votes in a city where the people expelled the Resistance Conference from their city 30 years ago, but now they are voting for a mayor who has anti-Netanyahu positions.
This city is a very important city; according to some media, the economy of New York alone is equivalent to 13% of the entire US economy, which is larger than the economies of Britain or France.
45% of the value of the entire world's financial markets is located in New York, and this city is considered the financial capital of the world. New York is also the center of important media outlets such as the New York Times, CNN, Bloomberg, NBC, The Times, etc.
It is the center of world diplomacy (with the headquarters of the United Nations in this city).
New York is the heart of Jewish power; with a population of nearly 2 million, Jews make up about 9% of the population of New York. Therefore, this city and its developments have global importance and give it a global character.
The growth of anti-Zionist discourse in this city means its growth in America and the world. Even groups such as homosexuals and Jews are taking a stand against oppression and Zionism, and these changes are important on a global level.
