Hazrat Zainab (SA); A Steadfast Lady of History and Eternal Legacy of Resistance
Hazrat Zainab Kubra (SA), daughter of Amir al-Mu’minin Ali (AS) and Hazrat Fatima Zahra (SA), in one of the most decisive periods in the history of Islam, with conscious patience, unparalleled courage, and an expression born of revelation, conveyed the message of the Ashura movement from captivity to the text of history and did not allow the blood of the martyrs of Karbala to be lost in silence and distortion; a lady who, by turning captivity into a medium and sermon into a weapon, kept the banner of resistance, awareness, and responsibility high for all generations.
In the darkest days of history, when the sun of justice set on the plain of Karbala and the sword of oppression rested on the throat of truth, a star shone in the sky of humanity, its light shattering the darkness and bringing the message of the blood of the martyrs to the ears of history. Zainab al-Kubra (SA), the daughter of Amir al-Mu’minin Ali (AS) and Hazrat Fatima Zahra (SA), not only witnessed the greatest tragedy in the history of Islam, but also became the bearer, guardian, and interpreter of the message of Ashura. The martyrdom-like death of this great lady is a new opportunity to reflect on her radiant personality and reread the lessons she left for all ages and generations.

Hazrat Zainab al-Kubra (SA) is the perfect embodiment of a multidimensional and comprehensive personality; a personality whose every aspect of her being is an inspiring model for contemporary man. Her knowledge and wisdom are renowned in history. A lady who was raised in the lap of revelation and Imamate; she inherited wisdom and courage from her father, and infallibility and piety from her mother. Her knowledge was not limited to theoretical knowledge, but was a deep, Quranic, and time-conscious knowledge. Her sermons in Kufa and the Levant were not emotional speeches, but reasoned statements, based on the Quran and full of religious and political knowledge; sermons that amazed the scholars and jurists of the time and toppled the intellectual and propaganda hegemony of the Umayyad government.

The patience and steadfastness of Zainab al-Kubra (SA) have an epic and unparalleled manifestation. She witnessed the martyrdom of her brother, children, nephews and the most beloved people in her life, but this amount of suffering did not bring her to her knees. The historic sentence "We have no opinion except the beautiful" was not a slogan, but a profound monotheistic interpretation of an event that on the surface was nothing but blood and fire. Zainab's (SA) patience was not a passive and surrendering patience; it was a conscious, active and responsible patience that paved the way for the continuation of the Ashura uprising and transformed it from a limited historical event into a living and lasting trend.

In her courage and eloquence, Zainab al-Kubra (SA) spoke as if the master of speech, Ali (AS), had spoken again. Her fiery sermons in Kufa and in the court of Yazid are a shining example of the courage of a Muslim woman; a woman who shook the palace of oppression without weapons, but with her words. Her words, like a sharp sword, removed the veil of the hypocritical face of power and recorded the legitimacy of the uprising of Imam Hussain (AS) forever in history.

The historical role and divine mission of Hazrat Zainab (SA) must be sought in conveying the message of Ashura. If it were not for Zainab, Karbala would have been buried on the very noon of Ashura. She turned captivity into a platform and chains into a medium. Managing the situation after the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS), exposing the crimes of the Umayyads and conveying the message of the blood of the martyrs to the ears of awakened consciences, made Zainab al-Kubra (SA) a figure without whom history would have incompletely narrated Ashura. It has been rightly said: “If the promotion of religion was through the killing of Hussein, its completion was through the caressing of Zainab’s hair.”

Another and very sensitive role of that Imam was the guardian of the line of Imamate. By caring for Imam Sajjad (AS) during his illness and captivity, Zainab al-Kubra (SA) did not allow the line of Imamate to be interrupted. She shouldered the entire burden of this heavy responsibility so that the legacy of prophethood and Imamate would be passed on to future generations. This role is less seen but is one of her most fundamental historical services to Islam.

Zainab al-Kubra (SA) is the perfect example of a Muslim woman; a model that shows that a woman can play a decisive role in the social and political arenas while maintaining dignity, chastity, and modesty. She presented a comprehensive image of a thoughtful, courageous, faithful, and influential woman; an image that was not formed on the margins of history, but in the context of great developments.

The life of Hazrat Zainab (SA) also has clear messages for today’s world. The first message is resistance to oppression. Zainab (SA) teaches us that silence in the face of oppression is a form of companionship with the oppressor, and that a believer should be “an enemy to the oppressor and a help to the oppressed.” The second lesson is social responsibility; even in the most difficult circumstances, she did not abandon the responsibility of guidance and awareness. Zainab al-Kubra (SA) was an example of the balance of reason and emotion; at the height of grief, she maintained her wisdom and accomplished her historical mission with prudence. Her firm faith in God was the source of this steadfastness and peace in the midst of the storm of calamities.

According to historical sources, Hazrat Zainab al-Kubra (SA) hastened to her eternal home in Medina or Syria on the 15th of Rajab in the year 62 AH; but her death was not the end of her journey. Today, her holy tomb in Damascus is a pilgrimage site for millions of lovers of the Ahl al-Bayt (AS), and her thoughts, message, and example continue to inspire nations that stand against oppression.

Hazrat Zainab (SA) is not only the hero of Karbala, but also the hero of history. She taught humanity how to keep the light of hope burning in the darkest moments and how to transform captivity into spiritual freedom. Her memory is a reminder of the fact that great ideals do not die with the passing of humans; rather, they become immortal when they are passed on correctly, consciously, and responsibly to future generations.

By honoring the memory of this great lady of Islam, I invite all lovers of the Ahlul Bayt (AS) to study the life of Hazrat Zainab the Great (SA) in more depth, and to apply the lessons of faith, resistance, and responsibility in their individual and social lives. She showed how a human being can become a maker of history and how a woman can present the complete picture of humanity.
