From Hard Power to Sustainable Authority; A Reflection on Recent Appointments in the Iranian Armed Forces
Over the past decades, the Islamic Republic of Iran has been the most important political, spiritual, and strategic supporter of the Palestinian cause and the resistance movements in the region. Therefore, any important change in Iran’s strategic structures is also taken into account by aligned movements in the region.
From this perspective, the new appointments can carry an important message for the resistance front: the structure of the Islamic Republic is continuing, rebuilding, and strengthening its capacities, and multilateral pressures have not been able to weaken or eliminate its principle of organization and decision-making power. This issue can be effective in strengthening the general morale of the resistance movements, because resistance needs trust, hope, cohesion, and confidence in the future, rather than relying solely on equipment.

The Islamic nation today faces numerous challenges; From the Palestinian issue and the crimes against the people of Gaza to internal disputes, external pressures, extremism, economic crises and media wars. In such an environment, the existence of a strong and stable country in the Islamic world that can defend its national interests and security and play a role in the regional arena is of particular importance to many Muslim nations.

The Holy Quran says:
And do not quarrel with one another, lest you become weak and your strength fades; and be patient, for Allah is with the patient.

Therefore, one of the important lessons of recent developments is the importance of coherence, coordination and preventing the creation of a vacuum in strategic management; A principle that is significant not only for Iran, but for all Islamic nations.

It is clear and evident that in times of crisis, the quality of leadership and strategic decision-making becomes doubly important. In such circumstances, the Supreme Command must be able to maintain calm, utilize the capacity of experienced forces, and adjust structures to suit new conditions.

From this perspective, the recent appointments can be considered part of the intelligent management of the situation after recent security developments and pressures; a management that aims to maintain readiness, prevent a command vacuum, and increase coordination between different parts of the armed forces.

Another important point is that authority should not be interpreted solely in terms of hard power. Sustainable authority is formed when military power is combined with political rationality, social cohesion, public trust, economic power, and national legitimacy.

In his famous letter to Malik Ashtar, Amir al-Mu’minin Ali (AS) strongly emphasizes the importance of the people and gaining their satisfaction, saying:
“Indeed, the pillars of religion, the Muslim community, and the tools for public hostility are the nation.”
That is, the pillars of religion, the unity of Muslims, and the preparation for public hostility are the people.
Therefore, the true authority of the Islamic Republic reaches its highest level when the defensive authority is combined with serving the people, justice, combating corruption, solving economic problems, and strengthening social capital.

The new appointments also convey the message of stability against psychological warfare well. One of the most important arenas of confrontation today is the media and psychological warfare. The enemy is trying to create the impression that the Islamic Republic is on the verge of collapse or losing its decision-making power by exaggerating problems, differences, and pressures. However, continuing decision-making at high levels, introducing alternative forces, and maintaining the command structure can counter such narratives in practice. In this context, some internal reports have also evaluated the new appointments as a sign of continuity in command and the readiness of the defense structure.

Without a doubt, the main importance of these appointments is not limited to the names of individuals. What is most important is to build structures that can continue their mission even with changes in managers. A successful governance system is military.
