United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has announced the appointment of Deborah Lyons of Canada as his new Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA).
A United Nations report says Afghanistan passed a grim milestone with more than 100,000 civilians killed or hurt in the last 10 years since the international body began documenting casualties in a war that has raged for 18 years.
Ali AKbar Velayati, senior adviser to Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Imam Seyyed Ali Khamenei for international affairs, said that without the intervention of invading countries, especially Americans, the process of peace and stability in the country would be accelerated.
The United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, Tadamichi Yamamoto, visited the headquarters of the Independent Election Commission (IEC) in Kabul to review officials working to tabulate and verify Afghanistan’s presidential election.
UNAMA Head Tadamichi Yamamoto released a statement to mark the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha, and wished all Afghans a peaceful and joyous celebration. “I hope that families around Afghanistan will be able to come together and celebrate Eid in an environment free of fear and violence” the statement said.
Marking the International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan on Sunday called on "everyone to respect, promote and protect the rights of women and girls to end violence against women."
