Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): Melissa, one of the most powerful hurricanes recorded in the history of the Caribbean region, has so far killed at least 34 people and injured hundreds.
The storm hit southwestern Jamaica on Tuesday at a speed of 295 kilometers per hour and gradually moved towards Cuba, Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
According to Al Jazeera, at least 25 people died in Haiti, eight in Jamaica and one in the Dominican Republic as a result of Hurricane Melissa.
In Haiti, where almost 12,000 people remain in emergency shelters, families are struggling with the increasing number of casualties. In the coastal town of Petit-Guave alone, dozens of houses collapsed and 20 people died as a result of the river's flooding.
Hurricane Melissa also caused extensive damage in Cuba, but no deaths have been recorded as a result of the storm so far.
