US Southern Command announced that its forces attacked a vessel during an operation in the waters of the Eastern Pacific Ocean, killing one of its crew members and taking part in Washington’s claim to combat drug trafficking.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): The US Southern Command (Southcom) announced yesterday morning (Wednesday) that, on the orders of General Francis Donovan, it had targeted a light vessel in the Eastern Pacific Ocean for a “deadly offensive attack.”
The official statement of the military organization stated that the operation was carried out under the “Southern Spear” task force and against what it called “designated terrorist organizations.”
In the attack, which was based on unproven intelligence claims of “drug trafficking,” one person was killed and two other crew members were rescued.
Washington has consistently used the label of counter-narcotics as a pretext for direct military operations in the open seas, and targeting fishing or transit boats belonging to indigenous peoples in the region has become a recurring pattern in recent years.
According to Southcom, after targeting the vessel, the US Navy contacted the US Coast Guard to “activate the search and rescue system for survivors”; “...immediately after the incident, the Coast Guard was notified to rescue survivors; as if they should have shot first and then pulled the wounded from the water.”
The Southern Command also stressed that no US forces were harmed in the operation.
