Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): Iranian President Masoud Pezzekian and US President Donald Trump signed the text of the aforementioned Memorandum of Understanding digitally and in person within a short period of time.
Considering Pakistan’s role as a mediator in the diplomatic process leading to the Islamabad Understanding, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif will also sign the text of the Memorandum of Understanding.
Esmail Baghai, spokesman for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced the news on a television program this morning: “The text of the Memorandum of Understanding was signed in both Persian and English.” Referring to the change in the method of signing the agreement from a face-to-face meeting in Switzerland to a virtual signing, he added: “Over the past 24 hours, after consultations, we have concluded that it is better for the text of the memorandum of understanding to be signed by the presidents of the two countries without the need for physical presence.”
According to Baghaei, one of the reasons for this decision was the increased political cost of violating the agreement if the two heads of state signed it directly. Also, the plan for the next meeting in Switzerland for technical negotiations is still on the agenda.
Meanwhile, CNN reported, citing an American official, that Donald Trump signed the written version of the agreement during his meeting at the Palace of Versailles in France.
According to officials from both sides, the implementation of the agreement and the start of the next phase of talks will follow in the coming days and under the supervision of mediators.
According to the text released by the White House, the main provisions of the memorandum include an immediate ceasefire on all fronts, the opening of the Strait of Hormuz to commercial ships, the end of the US naval blockade of Iran, the beginning of the process of releasing frozen Iranian assets, and a 60-day extension of the ceasefire for deeper negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program.
Esmail Baghaei, spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, emphasized that the commitments in the memorandum of understanding are mutual and that if either party violates it, the other party will not be bound. He also noted that the clause of non-interference in Iran’s internal affairs is of particular importance, given the country’s history of interventions.
After the news of the memorandum was released, the price of Brent oil fell below $80 per barrel, and Iranian financial markets also reacted positively. The dollar and other foreign currencies in Iran fell, and the Tehran Stock Exchange grew.
In cyberspace, different reactions to this historic event can be seen. Some users have described it as “the end of an unequal war” and “the beginning of normalization of relations,” while others have expressed doubts about the US’s commitment to its commitments. There have also been reports of limited protests by hardline groups in Tehran in opposition to the agreement.
According to political experts and analysts, the signing of this memorandum of understanding is a historic turning point in Iran-US relations after decades of hostility. Observers say that the change in the signing method from in-person to digital indicates the high sensitivity of both sides to reduce domestic political tensions and prevent any possible incidents at the in-person signing ceremony.
Studies show that Pakistan’s role as a mediator in this agreement has significantly enhanced Islamabad’s position in the field of regional diplomacy. Some experts believe that the end of the naval blockade and the opening of the Strait of Hormuz will have an immediate impact on global energy markets and reduce fuel prices.
