Officials in the Prisons Affairs Regulatory Authority say that in the past year, about 16,000 prisoners have been released from the country's prisons. They also assured the human rights of prisoners in prisons and say that prisons are no longer a place to torture people.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Kabul: In continuation of the government's reporting process to the nation, the officials of the Prisons Affairs Regulatory Department shared their one-year work report with the media and the public on Saturday (August 12, 2023) by attending the Government Information and Media Center.
 
Maulavi Mohammad Yusof Masri, the head of this institution, said in a press conference that was held for this purpose, that in the past one year, with the amnesty decree of the Emir of the Islamic Emirate, as well as religious occasions - Ramadan and two Eids - about sixteen thousand prisoners have been released from the country's prisons. .
 
He added that with the release of these people, there are now nearly sixteen thousand people, including prisoners and detainees, in the country's prisons and detention centers.
 
Based on Egyptian sayings; Out of this number, about ten thousand of them are "suspects" and are in detention centers waiting for the court's decision; but nearly seven thousand other "accused" have been sentenced by the court and are in the country's prisons.
 
Masri also stated that about 700 children under the age of eighteen are kept in the country's child correction centers, of which 300 were brought to this center by their families, and about 400 were collected from the city when they were homeless.
 
However, Qari Abdullah Hamdard, the deputy of the policy of the Prisons Affairs Regulatory Authority, said that this institution has tried to ensure that no prisoner is left without a fate after committing a crime and that the court issues a verdict on him as soon as possible.
 
There are no political prisoners in the country's prisons!
 
Lt. Gen. Habibullah Badr, the military deputy of the prisons regulation department, also said in this press conference that there are currently no political prisoners in the country's prisons.
 
Regarding the arrest of some media and civil figures, he said that they have not been transferred to prisons and are with other organizations.
 
In another part of his speech, Badr said that in the last two years, about 250 members of the Islamic Emirate who have committed crimes have been transferred to prisons.

The deputy of the policy of the prison regulation department further said that the country's prisons are no longer a place to torture people, but have become a place for education.
 
He added: "Prisons are no longer a place of reform, a place of vocational education and religious and contemporary sciences, and those who have been released have stopped wrongdoing and have turned to a dignified life."
 
Hamdard also said that the Islamic Emirate has established a presidency under the title of "Monitoring Deprivation of Freedom Centers" and this institution always monitors the country's prisons so that no prisoner is abused, harassed or tortured.
 
The deputy of the policy of the prison affairs regulation department pointed out that all the human rights of the prisoners are protected inside and they treat the prisoners like brothers.
 
Hamdard also said in this meeting that the country's prisons have been equipped in all areas compared to two years ago, and the daily allowance of prisoners has increased from 85 Afghani to 120 Afghani. Also, the country's prisons are equipped with AC and air conditioners in summer and heaters in winter.
 
He said that the quality of prisoners' food has improved and new clothes are distributed to them in both winter and summer seasons.
 
At the same time, Maulavi Masri, the head of this department, said that last year, the Prisons Regulatory Department spent about ten million dollars for the food and clothing of the prisoners.
 
He said that this department has provided training in tailoring, metalwork, carpentry, embroidery, boot making, repair of electrical appliances and electronic parts for the prisoners in order to be a source of income for both the prisoners and the prisons themselves and to provide for the lives of the prisoners after their release.
 
All diseases of prisoners are treated on time!
 
The head of the Prisons Affairs Regulatory Department also announced the improvement of the quality of health services for prisoners and said that this organization has funded prison clinics in 34 provinces of the country and provided them with all kinds of medicines.
 
He said that last year 21,000 prisoners benefited from the services of inpatient clinics and hospitals and were treated.
