Unprecedented high price of opium and its derivatives in Iran after the prohibition of drug cultivation in Afghanistan
Deputy head of the anti-narcotics headquarters of Khorasan Razavi province, said that the price of opium and its derivatives such as heroin and morphine in Iran has almost doubled compared to last year and has increased from 40 to 50 million tomans to 100 to 120 million tomans.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): Razavi, deputy of the anti-narcotics headquarters of Khorasan province/province, said in a conversation with Shahraranews that the price of opium and its derivatives such as heroin and morphine in Iran has almost doubled compared to last year.

Vahid Ashrafi continued: The price of opium last year was around 40 to 50 million tomans, and this year this number has reached 100 to 120 million tomans.

He did not consider the reason for the price increase to be unrelated to the actions of the Islamic Emirate and added: the news of the ban on poppy planting and the decrease in its production in Afghanistan caused the price of this opioid to increase significantly.

He pointed out: Since Afghanistan is the main producer of opium in the world, any incident from them will have an impact on the global and regional prices of opium.

Ashrafi Afroud: Of course, when the price of these materials increases, we will face some new approaches in its consumption and distribution; The first is the increase in impurities in opium, which is used to reduce the selling price, and the more substances, such as dirt or lead, are in opium, the more the side effects of its consumption increase.

He continued: Another issue is the increase in multiple drug use cases. This happens when an addict uses industrial drugs in addition to traditional drugs, and in addition to increasing exposure and social damage such as sleeping pills, it becomes difficult to treat these people; Because the speed of destruction of industrial materials is more than traditional and the one who uses both of these will suffer very bad conditions.

He continued: The change in the way of drug consumption and the general preference for industrial drugs is one of the results of the high price of opium, and addicts who do not have the money to buy these drugs, either increase the use of methadone or go to industrial drugs.

Kayseri pointed out: The price of industrial drugs has not increased, and it does not require transit and smuggling from Afghanistan, and it is easily supplied, and this will cause many problems in the future, of which the increase of drug addicts will be one of its results.

This is despite the fact that not long ago, the United Nations announced in its new report that drug cultivation in Afghanistan has decreased by 95% in 2023.

In a report published by the United Nations Department of Combating Narcotics and Crime, it was stated that according to the evaluations of this organization, drug cultivation in all parts of Afghanistan has decreased from 233 thousand hectares of land to 10 thousand hectares.

It should be noted that the destruction of poppy fields in Afghanistan started after the decree of Mullah Hebatullah Akhundzadeh, the leader of the Islamic Emirate, regarding the prohibition of the cultivation, smuggling and production of narcotics about one and a half years ago.
