One-year achievements of Balkh education: from eradicating corruption and identifying fake teachers to improving quality
At the same time as the one-year anniversary of the Islamic Emirate government is approaching, Balkh education officials say that they have taken measures in the past one year that were unique in the last 20 years. They have eradicated administrative corruption in education, identified fake teachers and improved the quality of education.
Afghan Voice Agency (AVA) - Mazar-e-Sharif: Mohammad Naeem Balkhi; The Director of Urban Education of Balkh Department of Education, today, Monday (August 15, 2022, in a conversation with AVA, said: Balkh Department of Education has carried out activities that had not been done in the past 20 years within a year. Corruption in education has been eliminated and the quality of education has improved.
 
He stated that determining accurate statistics of students, identifying imaginary teachers, appointing teachers who agree with the major and destroying administrative corruption are the functions of one year of education in Balkh.
 
The head of urban education added: Balkh education was able to determine the exact statistics of teachers and students of Mazar-e-Sharif city, according to this statistic, there are nearly 300,000 students and 7,000 teachers in public schools of Mazar-i-Sharif city.
 
According to him, Balkh education has also identified 500 overtime teachers who were not teaching in classes and were appointed according to the intermediary and then sent them to schools that were facing a shortage of teachers.
 
The head of Mazar-e-Sharif education department emphasized that in the previous government there were 150 teachers in some schools. But in some schools, 120 students were studying in one class due to lack of teachers.
 
He clarified that currently there is no middleman or money involved in education in Balkh, and each person is appointed according to his/her merit and capacity.
 
This is despite the fact that in the past years, people complained about the increase in administrative corruption in Balkh education and said that no action is possible without money and intermediaries in this department.
 
 But Mazar-e-Sharif city education director said: There is no corruption in any department related to education in Balkh. No person can charge anyone even a hundred afghanis to perform the work, and if such an incident happens, he cannot be here for 24 hours. Education is not a place for impure and exploitative people.
 
Ava's findings show that in the past years, when a person wanted to be employed in one of Balkh's schools, he had to pay a bribe of 50 to 150 thousand Afghanis first to the school principal and then to the officials and commissioners in education.
 
Also, the directorate of Education of Mazar-e-Sharif informed about the improvement of the quality of education and said: To improve the quality of education, we have converted 16 school principals, assigned each teacher to his field of study, and from now on, as in the past, Dari professors will not teach mathematics.
 
He also emphasized that he has plans in hand so that the students who graduate from 12th class will not be illiterate; rather, he should be fully literate and not have any academic problems. While in the past, a number of students were not able to read and write after twelve years of schooling.
 
In addition to the achievements of education in Balkh, the lack of textbooks, classes and teachers are still problems that persist, and the director of education in Mazar-e-Sharif announced the efforts to solve them.
 
The head of Mazar-e-Sharif city education department said that seven thousand official teachers and 1,300 paid teachers teach in Mazar-e-Sharif schools, and the salaries of the official teachers are paid by education. But teachers' salaries are still not paid.
 
He said that aid agencies distributed food to the teachers for six months; but after six months, they will not be given any help and he asks the institutes to help the teachers of this directorate.
 
Meanwhile, there are 460 schools under the control of education Department in Mazar-e-Sharif.
