Laghman officials optimistic regarding the growth in Pistachios harvest
The officials in eastern Laghman province of Afghanistan are optimistic that the Pistachios harvest will grow a large extent.
The officials have said that the growth in Pistachios harvest will parallel to the harvest of other fruits in this province as efforts are underway to increase the Pistachios garden.
The provincia government media office in a statement said one of the major achievements of the provincial agriculture, irrigation, and livestock directorate is the expansion of Pistachios gardens in the framework of the national horticulture and livestock in this province.
The source further adds that new gardens for Pistachios have been established over 250 acres of land apart from Dawlat Shah and Badpakh district.
According to the provincial government, at least 7000 Pistachios plants have been grown since the year 1396 and the majority of them are expected to produce Pistachios this year.
This comes as efforts are underway to expand the Pistachios fields and gardens as an alternative to eradicate the opium cultivation across the country.
The local officials in southern Kandahar province had earlier said that 450 Pistachio gardens will be built in several southern provinces with the help of Mercy Corps International to find an alternative for poppy crops for the farmers.
