6 soldiers freed in raid on Taliban jail in Wardak
ix Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers have been freed from a Taliban prison during an operation in central Maidan Wardak province, the Ministry of Defense (MoD) said on Monday.

Javed Ghafoor, spokesman for MoD, told Pajhwok Afghan News commandos conducted the air-and-ground operation in Mullah Hafiz and Mizaibak areas of Jaghato district late on Sunday night.

He said six soldiers, who had been in rebel custody for the past four months, were released from the Taliban jail. Eleven insurgents were killed and several others wounded, he said.

A number of weapons and ammunition belonging to the militants were also seized during the overnight raid, the MoD spokesman added.

Meanwhile, a resident of the area claimed civilians also suffered casualties in the operation. But Ghafoor said an investigation was underway into claims of civilian casualties.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, without commenting on the raid, claimed 14 civilians had suffered casualties during the foreign forces’ strike in Jaghato district.
