Khalilzad meets Taliban representatives in Qatar
US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad has held talks Taliban representatives in Qatar, a leading American newspaper reported on Saturday.

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) quoted a source familiar with the meeting in Doha as saying the talks were part of the Trump administration’s renewed diplomatic push for a negotiated end to the war in Afghanistan.
In the past four months, it was the second time that American envoys have held direct negotiations with Taliban representatives in the Gulf country. However, the content of Friday’s meeting was not immediately known.
In July, the WSJ recalled, the State Department's Deputy Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asia Alice Wells had met Taliban leaders in Doha -- a contact that was chracterised as "talks about talks." according to the Wall Street Journal.
America’s newly-appointed point man on Afghanistan is on his maiden swing through the region, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
In Washington, the State Department refused to comment on the Doha meeting. "We can't confirm specific meetings or the content of diplomatic conversations," an unnamed State Department official told Reuters.
