President Ashraf Ghani on Sunday expressed his readiness to offer the Taliban insurgents ‘a political office’ and security in capital Kabul or southern Kandahar province.

Addressing a gathering in Ghanikhel district of eastern Nangarhar province, where he traveled today with a high level delegation, the president congratulated the security forces on defeating Daesh or Islamic State militant group in the district.
Journalists were not invited to the meeting but Nangarhar governor’s house shared some parts of the president’s speech with the media.
Ghani becomes the first Afghan president to visit Ghanikhel district of Nangarhar. The meeting was organized at the Afghan National Army (ANA)’s battalion in the district.
Meshrano Jirga head Fazal Hadi Muslimyar, National Security Advisor, Hamdullah Mohib, National Directorate of Security (NDS) chief Masum Stanikzai, Nangarhar governor Shah Mahmod Miakhel, a number of cabinet members, advisors and security officials were in attendance.
The president congratulated the Afghans on defeating Daesh or Islamic State in the area and said people could openly commute in Ghanikhel district and Shinwari region of Nangarhar.
Commenting on recent peace talks in Moscow where a number of Afghan politicians and Taliban representatives discussed peace, Ghani said, “Where it is better to discuss peace, Moscow or Makkah.”
Addressing the Taliban, the president he was ready to open a political office for the Taliban in Kabul, Kandahar or in Nangarhar province and protect them from any threats.
Ghani hoped the bloodshed, which continued for decades in Afghanistan, would come to an end by reaching peace.
He promised to reconstruct homes of Shinwari people which were destroyed during the conflict and said public uprising groups would be supported in the region by the spy agency.
Nangarhar governor Shah Mahmod Miakhel said he would pay equal attention to all districts and work to narrow the gap between the government and people through good governance.
Haji Malak, a tribal elder, thanked the president for visiting the region and said it was the first such trip by an Afghan president.
