Abdullah hopes Ghani
Afghan Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah on Monday expressed hope that President Ashraf Ghani's release of hundreds of Taliban prisoners is not an election campaign effort.

Earlier this month, Ghani ordered release of 887 Taliban prisoners to mark Eid-al-Fitr that followed the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
Addressing the regular ministerial council meeting, Abdullah said that Afghans want just peace and there is an opportunity for it.
“Release of Taliban prisoners has been part of a goodwill gesture, but if such moves take campaign shape and if they are considered part of election campaign, then they would lose their effectiveness,” Abdullah said.
“We don’t want thousands of people to live in prisons for lifetime or war to continue considering the fact that Afghans have been suffering from war for 40 years,” Abdullah said.
Abdullah said that one person cannot become a “peace hero,” and that people should be represented well in their demand for peace.
