Afghan cabinet committee approves inclusion of mother
Afghan cabinet's law committee on Monday approved a proposal to include mother's name on national identity cards.
It comes after women’s rights activists launched a campaign three years ago, demanding that women’s name should be included in official documents.
A draft of amended Population Registration Act has been prepared to allow women to have their names on their children’s ID cards and it was approved by the cabinet’s law committee, according to a statement from the office of Second VP Sarwar Danish who chaired the committee meeting.
The draft is expected to be forwarded to the cabinet and then to the parliament for approval before it could be enforced.
The amendment draft has been prepared by justice ministry and National Statistics and Information Authority.
