Officials in Libya have announced that at least 2,000 people died as a result of the devastating floods in this country, and between 5,000 and 6,000 others are missing.

Afghan Voice Agency (AVA): Reuters, quoting Ahmed Mesmari, the spokesman of the Libyan National Army, reported today (Tuesday, September 12) that this flood was caused by the collapse of the water dams in the city of "Derna" due to the storm and rain. It has spread strongly in this country.
He said: "This disaster occurred after the dams above the Derna collapsed and took all the neighborhoods with their residents into the sea."
Libya is politically divided between east and west, and public services have collapsed since a NATO-led uprising in 2011 that followed years of conflict.
The internationally recognized government in Tripoli does not control the eastern regions.
In Tripoli, the three-member Presidential Council, which acts as the head of government in the divided country, appealed for help from the international community.
"We ask brotherly and friendly countries and international organizations to help," the statement said.

Meanwhile, the United Nations in Libya said it was closely monitoring the storm and would "provide immediate relief assistance to support response efforts at the local and national levels."
On the other hand, the Qatar State News Agency has reported that Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar, ordered the government of that country to send aid to the affected areas in eastern Libya.
