Karzai condemn Afghan woman’s public execution
President Hamid Karzai condemned on Monday the execution-style shooting by Taliban leaders of a young Afghan woman believed to be having an affair. But critics say his policies have encouraged the Taliban to mistreat women.

The woman’s death, which was recorded, shows the woman, named Najiba, crouched, her back to a man identified as her husband. He is handed an AK-47 assault rifle, which he uses to shoot her from behind. By the third shot, she collapses, but he continues to fire 10 more times as about 150 men on a nearby hillside cheer.

President Hamid Karzai has ordered the arrest of Taliban members who publicly executed a woman for adultery in Afghanistan.

White House spokesman Jay Carney condemned the killing, echoing similar sentiments of horror expressed by the top US military commander in Afghanistan, General John Allen, Afghan President Hamid Karzai, and the US embassy in Kabul.

“They are brutal people and like savage animals, they killed another human being,” Basir Salangi, the provincial governor of Parwan Province, told Reuters. The village in Parwan where the execution took place is about an hour north of Kabul, the Afghan capital. “It is clear that they are outlaws and must be delivered into the hands of the law,” he said.

Afghan officials say a manhunt is underway for the Taliban executioners, who are believed to have been fighting over the woman they executed for adultery. The incident has raised international outrage and concern over what the 2014 withdrawal of NATO troops in Afghanistan will mean for women in the country.
